Japanese lawmakers are considering extending the current Diet session beyond 20 June in order to pass a number of key bills, including the long-awaited IR Implementation Bill establishing the framework for Japan’s first integrated casino resorts.
According to members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Diet session could be extended until late June or early July, with casinos and the government’s labor reform bill at the top of the priority list.
“We are short of deliberation time – we cannot help but extend the Diet term,” a senior LDP politician told local media.
News of a possible extension of the Diet session comes after a vital gambling addiction bill passed through the House of Representatives last Friday – the last major hurdle before debate over the IR Implementation Bill itself begins in parliament in earnest.
