More than 3 million people arrived in Macau in February, with Chinese New Year celebrations ensuring a 23.1% year-on-year increase and the highest visitation figure since August 2014.
The 3,070,937 arrivals included around 1.4 million overnight visitors – up 13.3% on February 2016 – and 1.67 million same-day visitors, representing a 32.6% increase. The average length of stay remained stable at 2.2 days.
Mainland Chinese visitors grew 37.3% to 2.23 million in February while those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme set a new single-month record, up 57.9% to 1.4 million. Mainland visitors came primarily from Guangdong Province (1,141,703), Zhejiang Province (76,439) and Shanghai (72,241).
Visitors from Hong Kong (501,753) inched up by 0.1% year-on-year, while those from Korea (71,633) and Taiwan (79,670) dropped by 13.4% and 8.4% respectively.
In terms of mode of transport, arrivals by land saw the most growth, increasing by 34.9% year-on-year to 1,970,653 including a 31.2% surge in those coming through the border gate to 1,634,847. Air arrivals surged 23.3% to 268,330, while those via sea rose slightly by 1.9% to 831,954.
Combined arrivals for the first two months of 2018 grew 8.2% to 5.8 million including an 11% increase in overnight visitation. Mainland Chinese visitation was up 15.1% to 4.2 million.
