Visitors on package tours visiting Macau in January this year surged 41.4% year-on-year to 755,000, latest data by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) showed. The figures were fueled by a 49.8% increase in mainland visitors to 603,000.
The number of South Korean (50,000) and Taiwanese visitors (47,000) using package tours services also increased 13.5% and 41.0% respectively.
The number of guests of hotels and guesthouses in January 2018 rose by 12.9% year-on-year to 1,176,000, with those from mainland China (815,000) and the Republic of Korea (52,000) up 20.0% and 37.2% year-on-year respectively. However, the number of guests from Hong Kong (102,000) and Taiwan (40,000) declined 19.5% and 1.1% respectively.
The average occupancy rate stood at 90.3%, up 8.7 percentage points year-on-year, with occupancy in 5-star (93.5%) and 4-star hotels (91.9%) rising by 10 and 9.6 percentage points respectively.
A year-on-year comparison showed there were seven more hotels and guesthouses at the end of January 2018 to a total of 114, while the number of guest rooms were up 2.6% to 37,000, with 5-star hotel rooms up 2.2% to 22,000 (59.9% of total).
DSEC data also showed the average length of stay of guests remained at 1.4 nights year-on-year. Visitor-guests accounted 74.8% of the total overnight visitors, up 3.1% year-on-year.
