MGM Macau’s long-awaited Cotai integrated resort, MGM Cotai, will finally open its doors to the public today.

The US$3.4 billion resort, which has suffered a series of delays in the wake of the devastating Typhon Hato which struck Macau on 23 August 2017, will hold a press conference this afternoon followed by a cocktail reception for media and dignitaries before the official Grand Opening Ceremony at 18:30. It is expected that around 70% of the property will be opened to the public immediately following the ceremony.

Inside Asian Gaming was granted a tour of MGM Cotai on Monday, enjoying an intriguing first glimpse of MGM’s new flagship investment.

MGM Cotai will open with 982 slot machines and 177 gaming tables including 100 new-to-market tables and 77 moved across from peninsula property MGM Macau. Another 25 new tables will become available on 1 January 2019.

When fully operational, MGM Cotai will include 1,390 hotel rooms and suites including 1,248 Resort Rooms of between 43 and 51 square meters each, 99 Suites from 87 to 94 square meters each and 16 Skylofts at 128 square meters each. Twenty-seven The Mansion Villas, between 215 to 570 square meters in size, will come online mid-year.

Around 500 Resort Rooms will open today, with MGM revealing on Monday that all available rooms are fully booked through February.

MGM Cotai features nine new dining concepts including restaurants by four celebrity chefs – Grill 58° by Mauro Colagreco, Aji by Mitsuharu Tsumura, Coast by Graham Elliot and Janice Wong MGM.

The new property boasts 3,000 square meters of meetings and event space, plus Asia’s first dynamic theater which can seat up to 2,000 people in more than 10 different configurations. The theater utilizes a giant 900- square-metre 4K LED screen said to be the world’s largest permanent indoor LED screen.

Likewise, MGM Cotai’s central entertainment space, Spectacle, comprises the world’s largest area of permanent indoor LED screens showcasing an array of digital art from around the globe.

“Featuring some of the world’s most renowned artists including Joel Sartore, Magda Indigo, Garth Williams, Rob Kesseler and Wolfgang Stuppy, Spectacle sets a platform for the artists to reveal the beauty of the world including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites of China,” the company said. “The digital art comprises the element of nature, art, music, language and culture for guests to discover and understand the world by inspiring them to perceive it in a different way.”

MGM Cotai also reflects co-Chairperson and Executive Director Pansy Ho’s love of art with more than 300 artworks throughout, including 28 Chinese imperial carpets dating from the Qing Dynasty and once adorning the Forbidden City in Beijing.

It includes a Chairman’s Collection with over 40 pieces of contemporary art from Asian artists chosen by Ms Ho and MGM China Chairperson and Executive Director Jim Murren.
