Goa’s offshore casinos have been granted a temporary reprieve with the state government extending the deadline for relocation away from the Mandovi River for another three months to 30 September.
The five holders of offshore gaming licenses in Goa – Delta Corp Ltd, Goa Coastal Resorts and Recreation Pvt Ltd, Highstreet Cruises and Entertainment, Golden Peace Infrastructure Pvt Ltd and Delta Pleasure Cruise Company – had previously been told by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to find a new home further out to sea by 30 June 2017.
The extension comes after neither the operators nor the new state government were able to find a suitable site in time. It also continues a two-year battle to move offshore casinos off the Mandovi, with a number of other locations including Aguada Bay and the Zuari, Chapora and Sal rivers all ruled out for various reasons.
Ironically, a sixth offshore casino operated by Golden Globe Hotels Private Ltd is set to enter the Mandovi after its launch was approved by the High Court of Bombay.
