MGM will host the “MGM Lion Dance Championship – Junior Lion Dance Training Program 2017” from 3 July 3 to 18 August this year. For the third year in a row, this annual summer training activity is designed for children aged five to 10 to learn the fundamentals of traditional Chinese lion dance. Recruitment began this week.
In collaboration with Macau Hong Wai Sports and Recreations Association and with the continuous support of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR government and Macao Government Tourism Office, the “Junior Lion Dance Training Program 2017” is another signature program of MGM in its effort to pass on the culture and tradition of this Chinese sport to a wider and local community, in particular the younger generation. It offers a great opportunity for local children to develop knowledge about the history of this traditional cultural sports, the use of different props and instruments, fundamental skills and techniques, strokes and grip, cultivating in them a sense of initiative, self-discipline and a high degree of team spirit.
The training takes place twice-a-week with a schedule between 3 July and 18 August, where classes will be divided into different progressive phases over a seven-week period. It will be instructed by Mr. Mak Chi Leong, the Chairman of Macau Hong Wai Sports and Recreations Association and the Chief Coach of the Dragon and Lion Dances Department.
Mr Mak, a true master in this field, has organized numerous award-winning dragon and lion dance troupes to take part in local and international competitions.
Launched in 2015, the “Junior Lion Dance Training Program” has been harnessing an overwhelming success and positive feedback from the public for the past two years. More than 110 graduates completed this training program and performed at public events, including MGM’s signature annual event “MGM Lion Dance Championship – Macau International Invitational”, annual charity event “Walk for A Million” and “Wushu Masters Challenge”, impressing spectators and receiving high praise.
