Macau’s reputation as one of the most densely populated cities on earth doesn’t look like easing anytime soon with the number of persons per square kilometer rising by 300 people in 2016.
According to figures released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau’s population density rose from 21,100 per square kilometer to 21,400 in 2016, coming in at just over 650,000 people across 30.5 square kilometers.
The increased population also saw a reduction in air quality, increased water consumption and a considerable rise in both domestic and commercial waste.
The Northern District recorded the most number of “poor” days when it came to air quality with 19, followed closely by Taipa and Coloane with 17.
Domestic waste increased by 5% to 239,992 tonnes while the business sector saw its waste rise by 10.8% to 137,949 tonnes.
