MGM starts “Go Green” campaign for employees

MGM rolled out a two-week Go Green Campaign for its 6,000 employees from 20 March 20 to 3 April  as a way to support the Green Week of Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau’s (IACM), as well as the annual Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum & Exhibition. The Campaign consists of an ocean conservation talk, beach cleaning activity and more.

On 21 March, MGM organized a talk for employees on ocean conservation. With the technical knowledge and experience, two of MGM’s onsite marine experts facilitated a talk focusing on issues related to water pollution and the need to protect our marine environment. MGM’s Aquarium Team looks after MGM Macau’s large cylinder-shaped aquarium situated in the Grande Praça and is tasked with managing the tank’s aquatic environment plus feeding and caring for the magnificent selection of sea life.

During the talk, employees were introduced to the issues related to water pollution, particularly from plastic materials – which take hundreds of years to decompose – and the need for everyone to act upon protecting our marine environment. The talk ended with a trip to the aquarium, with the experts giving advice on the day-to-day habits such as reducing the use of plastic disposables and disposing of waste in a responsible manner.

The talk further explained the steps that MGM is taking to reduce its waste and the expansion of its recycling program. Since 2012, MGM has reduced its waste to incinerator by 15% through its waste management program. At the end of the talk, each participant was given a souvenir from MGM’s soap recycling and donation program with Clean the World, a program which takes leftover soap from MGM’s guest rooms and reshapes them into perfectly useful new bars of soap after sanitization; these soap bars are donated locally and internationally to those in need.

With the support of IACM, a group of 37 MGM Volunteer Team members gathered for a Beach Cleaning activity at a beach area near Sai Van Bridge on 30 March 30, led by Mr. Grant Bowie, CEO and Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited. The team worked to sweep the beach clean of rubbish washed onto the shore, and through this activity further learned of their responsibility to protect the environment through daily habits.

“Environmental sustainability is part of our operating ethos and we remain committed to engaging our employees and communities through activities such as these to help build a healthy and sustainable environment for Macau and our future generations,” Mr Bowie said.
