Visitation to Macau grew by 1.6% through the first four months of the year, paced by a 5.9% year-on-year increase in arrivals from mainland China.
The government’s Statistics and Census Service reported that mainland visitors accounted for almost 52% of all arrivals at 5.95 million, followed by Hong Kongers, whose numbers declined 4.7% to 2.26 million, and Taiwanese, down 4.6% to 320,195. Total visitation January-April was 9.47 million.
Visitation from the mainland surged 10.4% in April to 1.54 million, with South Korea and Thailand also posting strong gains of 8.9% (30,616) and 20% (27,173), respectively. Visitation from the Russian Federation was up 21.1% to 2,726. Visitation from Hong Kong and Taiwan was down 17.7% and 4.8%, respectively.
Guangdong province was the source of the majority of April’s visitors from China at 647,340, following by a distant-second Fujian province at 65,463. Mainlanders traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme totaled 613,876.
Citywide, the average length of stay in April was flat year on year at one day. The average for overnight visitors was 1.8 days and for day-trippers 0.2 days.
