Australia’s commercial free-to-air television licensees want gambling odds banned during live sports broadcasts.
In line with a parliamentary inquiry into gambling reform, Free TV Australia is suggesting that commentators and their guests be prohibited from promoting live odds during matches and for 30 minutes before and after, with the rule incorporated into the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice.
The proposal, which has been posted on Free TV Australia’s Web site for public comment, reflects “an agreement reached between the government and commercial radio, commercial television and subscription broadcasters,” the group said in a statement.
Senator Richard Di Natale of the Green Party has said he plans to introduce legislation that would impose a blanket ban on the promotion of odds by commentators or bookmakers and prohibit programming from offering sports betting services during broadcasts, although bookies would still be allowed to advertise.
Studies have indicated that Australians are not happy with the constant intrusions by bookmakers offering odds during games.
“We have to separate sport from gambling,” Mr Di Natale said. “Young kids should be able to enjoy a game of footy without thinking that gambling has to be part of that experience.”
