Las Vegas set a record for visitation in 2012 at 39.7 million, an increase of about 500,000 over the old mark set prior to the recession in 2007.
A slight jump in convention attendance, which has suffered overall amid the slow US economy, is cited for part of the growth. The number of conventions, meetings and trade shows was up almost 14% over 2011. The Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority estimates 2012’s attendance at 4.9 million, a 1.6% gain over 2011. In all, the authority counted 21,615 MICE events for the year.
Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport was up 0.4% to 41.7 million. Motor vehicle traffic into the city was up 0.9% to 100,774 vehicles a day. Traffic on Interstate 15, the main road from Southern California, was up 4.5%.
Citywide hotel and motel occupancy for the year the LVCVA estimates at 84.4%, basically flat with 2011. The average daily room rate of US$108.08 represented an increase of 2.8%.
