A Malaysian woman claims a manager at Marina Bay Sands tried to talk her into accepting a lesser prize after the first-time slot user got a message saying ‘$416,742.11’ and ‘Cash Bonus’ at the machine she was playing on Tuesday.

Ms Choo Hong Eng, aged 58, who runs a food stall in Singapore, told the The Straits Times that moments later, a casino manager arrived to tell her that the machine had a glitch, and that she had instead won S$50,000 and a sports car worth S$258,962 (US$202,671), which she could sell back to the casino for cash.

But Ms Choo has now filed a complaint with the Casino Regulatory Authority and several people have come forward to say they witnessed the original bonus message.

Ms Choo added: “Even though I’m illiterate in English, I can tell the difference between ‘cash’ and ‘car’. One has four letters and the other has three.”

A CRA spokesman confirmed that before the machines are deployed, they are tested by qualified independent test laboratories to ensure that they meet all CRA requirements. It’s expected that data from the machine will now be examined to establish the sequence of events. The investigation could take up to one month.

MBS declined to comment.
