Macau International Jewelry & Watch Fair 2009—due to be held at the Venetian Convention & Exhibition Center on Cotai from 28th February to 3rd March—is being postponed, the organisers said last week.

In a clear sign that economic recession is starting to bite hard, the promoter said “appalling results” from another trade fair in January made it “imprudent” to go ahead with the new event.

“To ensure that we arrive at the best practicable decision amidst the current financial chaos, we have been consulting our exhibitors, buyers, and advisors in the past several months and in the end, the message is clear as crystal that it would be imprudent to continue the fair as scheduled just for the sake of doing it or even for fulfilling some contractual obligations,” said the organiser, MJS Trade Fairs (Macau) Ltd, in a prepared statement.

“Nor is it a responsible thing to do as a trade fair organiser knowing that there will be negative response from the market. The appalling results of the January show in Macau further confirm this,” added the company.

A new date for the postponed event is yet to be announced. MJS Trade Fairs stressed though that two other events, the Canton Jewelry & Watch Fair at the Guangzhou Mart in Pazhou, Guangzhou, China, from 20th to 22nd September, and the Macao de Luxe at the Four Seasons Hotel in Macau from 23rd to 25th September, will go ahead as planned.
