Temporary suspension of building work by Las Vegas Sands Corp. on its Cotai project isn’t just bad news for local construction workers, the local economy and the company. It’s also bad news for the environment.
The reason is that The Venetian Macao complex is partly made up of ‘Eco-Blocks’—an environmentally friendly brick made from recycled glass bottles.
The bricks, invented by Poon Chi-sun, a scientist at Polytechnic University in Hong Kong, don’t just recycle waste materials. The chemical composition of the finished bricks means that they act as a catalytic converter of nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide is a major greenhouse gas and a common by-product of combustion in car engines, so the idea is that the bricks are used in structures built near to roads, thus helping to reduce local air pollution.
